Dr. Herbert S. Cassel, 93, of Fayetteville, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 26, 2022, at Chambersburg Hospital. Born Tuesday, November 27, 1928, in Palmyra, PA, he was the son of the late Clemence and Eva (Alspach) Cassel. He was married to Nancy Ellen (Jeacock) Cassel until her death on July 23, 2009.
A military veteran, Dr. Cassel served with the US army from 1954 to 1956. He was stationed in Wurzburg, Germany, where he met his future wife, Ingrid Walter (Glasco).
Herb followed his desire for higher education, obtaining a BA and MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph. D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he taught for several years. Later, he taught for many years at Shippensburg University until his retirement.
Throughout his life, Herb was a lover of music. After retirement, he enjoyed playing saxophone and clarinet in several bands in the region.
He is survived by a daughter: Ivy M. Allen, of Roseville, CA. Also surviving are two stepchildren: Linda C. Gutowski, married to Robert, of Cincinnati, OH, and William O. Franz, of Wilmington, DE: a grandson, James A. Allen, of Roseville, CA, as well as Dr. Cassel’s extended family and caring friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Steven Allen.
A Memorial Service will begin at Noon on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at the Rothermel-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 25 West Pine Street, Palmyra, PA 17078, 717-838-9211, with The Reverend Michael E. Allwein officiating. Interment will follow in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra. A time of visitation with the family will be held from 11 AM until the time of the service on Thursday.
